A TASTE OF VANILLA (Part 1 of 2): THE ORIGINAL MINI-EPISODES.

EPISODE 01 - "PEARL OF AFRICA:
UGANDA'S BOURBON VANILLA"

As mentioned in the previous post about URTEKRAM ® Organic Bourbon Vanilla, we've decided to see
about Uganda and its vanilla production, and here is a little bit of what we've learned:

Uganda, officially the Republic of Uganda, is geographically a country located in East Africa, in the region of the East Africa's Great Lakes: Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, Lake Albert, and Lake Edward. It makes borders in the east with Kenya, in the north with South Sudan, in the west with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the south-west with Rwanda, and in the south with Tanzania. The numerous lakes and wetlands of Uganda are also one of the main sources of the River Nile, the world's longest river, as it flows 4,132 miles (6,650 kilometers) up and northward into Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

Agriculturally Uganda has plenty of internal renewable water resources, being a well-watered country, with a varied but in general an equatorial stable climate and humidity. These natural factors and by having a golden soil (as many countries do in Africa) are very propitious to the vanilla plantation, since to flourish and produce truly aromatic beans the vanilla plants needs normally a leafy tropical environment, with plenty of dappled sunlight, buckets of rain, and a rich loamy soil.

Globally, the country has been experiencing a good stability and a consistent economical growth, and its main agricultural exports are coffee, maize, tobacco, tea, sugar, cocoa beans, beans, sesame, and several other products including vanilla. Around 2014, great efforts were made to make a country wide vanilla replanting campaign, that started raising the country's production to 1000 tonnes of cured vanilla beans in the past few years.

The excellent climatic conditions, the young type of production and the naturally rich fresh soils result in a naturally produced vanilla with superior quality with no extra additives. This vanilla is produced in 2 crops a year, and it's always highly fresh. Flowering and pollination for the major season is between September and October with the harvesting occurring in June and July. The following year's minor season occurs between May and June for harvests in January and February the following year. Vanilla Moon is processed by the use of the traditional curing techniques, which ensure that the vanilla is of a high quality, and with high vanillin content, better color, sheen and moisture content.

Ugandan Vanilla contains a notably high Vanillin content of around 2% up to 3.2%, found in the highest Ugandan grades, whereas Madagascan vanilla, currently the most well reputed and recognized origin generally averages about 1.8%. The Uganda vanilla powder also has a normal amount of vanillin between 1,1% and 1,8%.

The most common vanilla products available in the food manufacturing retail market are beans and extract; pulp (vanilla caviar), paste and powder. Normally one vanilla pod with 14cm weights about 2 or 3g, but pods with 21+cm may reach in average up to 7g or more.

As the country is known as "The Pearl of Africa", we decided to baptize the vanilla with the same homonymous name of: PEARL OF AFRICA, UGANDA'S BOURBON VANILLA, by the simple reason that that is a very pretty name for a vanilla and that easily defines its place of origin, its variety, and its qualities.

As for taste matters, the vanilla beans cultivated in Uganda are described to be creamy like Madagascar's Bourbon but slightly sweeter and with notes of chocolate, with a complex bouquet of flavors that add a full flavor to all recipes calling for vanilla, especially ice cream, cookies and beverages. Also in desserts using chocolate, the chocolate notes in the vanilla fully interact and layer with the actual chocolate flavor.

The video presented here belongs to a series made by the Ice Cream company Ben & Jerry, as they have several fair trade projects in Uganda, and also use this fair trade vanilla in their ice-creams and products.

BIOVEGAN PORTUGAL ® RECOMMENDED PRODUCT - BIO VEGAN BOURBON VANILLA POWDER 10GR FROM URTEKRAM ® 5,99€ AT CONTINENTE.PT
A RECOMMENDED NEW PRODUCT:

BIO VEGAN BOURBON VANILLA POWDER FROM URTEKRAM ®,
WITH AN EXCELLENT PRICE VALUE: 10Gr / 5,99€.

Recently introduced in Portugal by Continente's supermarket chain, Urtekram ® is a brand from Urtekram International A/S, an organic producer company from Denmark, that is also Scandinavia's largest organic wholesaler. Among other meanings in Danish, an "urtekræmmer" is an old-fashioned term for a spice/herb merchant or traveling salesman selling spices, medical herbs, drugs etc.

The company, that was founded in 1972, has quite an extensive range of food products, like for instance for breakfast and muesli, frozen foods, baking, nuts, snacks, fruit, rice, tinned food, specialties, spreads, marmalade, biscuits, cakes, crispbread, oil, vinegar, spices, pasta, garnish and beverages, all of them mostly vegan, and also produces body-care and cosmetic products.

Their website is quite friendly, very well detailed in information, and Urtekram ® has also done one thing quite important: to make some of the products labels all in portuguese. This also shows that the company invests and cares for its new consumers, and in the way that they see and relate with their products.

One of the products that caught our attention both by its price and by the product itself was the Organic Vegan Bourbon Vanilla Powder, that is sold at a very good price of 5,99€ by 10g of powder, actually half of the price that other bourbon vanillas are being sold in the market. This organic bourbon vanilla is produced in Uganda, a country geographically near by Madagascar, that has entered the vanilla production market not too long ago, more or less one decade, and it's conquering the experts opinion by its superior quality, as it started to be considerate even better than the one from the vanillas of Madagascar.

As we didn't knew anything about Uganda's bourbon vanilla, we've decided to check it a little bit,
and we will share it in the next post.

Happy vanilla time,

Thanks for watching,
