BIOVEGAN PORTUGAL ® A TASTE OF JAPAN - MINI-POSTER 013 - JAPANESE RICE SELECTED DESIGN CHOICES

A TASTE OF JAPAN: THE ORIGINAL MINI-POSTERS.

POSTER 013:

"JAPANESE RICE SELECTED DESIGN CHOICES AND SEASON 01 FINALE"

A collage poster made for episode 14, with our design choices of Japanese rice packaging. As some might know and others maybe not, packaging design normally creates a first bond and starts a personal relationship between a product and a person, so as people are normally different, each person might react in fact differently to the same product or design.

The design must however, one way or another, translate the product and what the product is, or what it represents for the person that is going to choose it or to buy it, in particular when the package is placed side by side with dozens of others that have similar products or contents. In this case the choices we have made had to be almost instinctive, as the packages, the information or the brands are all in Japanese.

So, from left to right, the white rice container on the left is an adapted modern version of the ancient and traditional Japanese "bambooware", used to preserve hermetically many things like food, powders, salt, etc, and that uses bamboo, straw and tied ropes as a sealer and a lock.;

The 2 brown rice packages in the center are totally different, so it's almost the same product with 2 different colors: one with a very uncommon and very dark Prussian blue masterly combined with a very synthetic white lettering and a red dot, in a combination that reminds very much old Chinese imperial texts, and the other one is very earthly, with a very well picked mildly but so exact "ricy" brown tone that really traduces what the taste of cooked whole brown rice looks like;

And finally, the mochigome package on the right with a so beautiful mild blue and a so simple snow illustration, really feels like a sweet and dreamy powder sugar kindergarten and a winter landscape rice version of the original illustrations of the Little Prince of Antoine de St-Exupéry, and it really makes that we really wanna buy it.

Hopping you like our design choices,

Thanks for watching,

EPISODE 014 - CLASSIC VEGAN SUSHI (Part 7):

THE ABC OF VEGAN SUSHI INGREDIENTS:

ORIGINAL JAPANESE RICE FROM THE GROUND UP 4:

"ORIGINAL RICE AND RICE PACKAGING MADE IN JAPAN"

This episode is a small overview of some of the original rice and rice packaging that is sold in Japan, selected randomly from the hundreds of samples we have been seeing during this research.

From the many existing varieties of the original Japonica Genmai or Japonica brown rice cultivated in Japan, among others the more common to find are: Koshihikari, Sasanishiki, Akitakomachi, Yamada Nishiki, Hitomebore, Musenmai, Asahi, Hinohikari, Kinuhikari, Oborozuki, Yumepirika, Kamachi, Hoshinoyume, Domannaka, Nihonbare, Haenuki, Hanaechizen, Kirara397, Phoosphoos takuba or Tsuyahime.

It's also normal to find other varieties of original Japonica but from different species or sub-species, like the Black Japonica or black rice, the Red Japonica or red rice, or from the glutinous type commonly known as mochigome, sticky rice, sweet rice or waxy rice, used in many dishes but mostly to make popular sweets and confectionary like mochi.

BIOVEGAN PORTUGAL ® A TASTE OF JAPAN - ORIGINAL JAPANESE BLACK AND RED RICE PACKAGES, PLUS A TRIPLE RICE BLEND

Packages of  black rice, red rice, and a blend of brown, red and black rice (normally sold in smaller quantities, with 200g, 500g, 1Kg or more), as this type of rices are considerate to be of special varieties.

In average, the prices of rice in Japan may vary from 1 - 1,5€ Kg up to 3 to 6€ as a normal maximum, depending mainly on the variety, quality and quantity. However, is not uncommon that special crops or rare varieties may reach a much higher price, also depending on the type of market.

Hope you enjoy,
